Gettysburg

I am a big history buff but Gettysburg was Derick’s idea. He had gone in the 1970’s with Boy Scouts and it made an impression. I also went then but remembered it less fondly! So glad we did.

It is a beautiful town surrounded by rolling farm land. Foliage was at its peak and made for a scenic drive. We had a day to visit the National Park and museum, then did the driving tour the next day.

Beautiful drive with lots of monuments to the battle
Monuments to each state involved. This is Vermonts. 4,400 Vermonters fought here

Gettysburg Halloween!

Cabelas

We plan where we want to spend a few days then find an overnight spot along the way. We left RI for Gettysburg but needed a stop along the way. We average about 250 miles a day. We try to stay in free or low cost sites since we are only spending the night. The only one to show up along our way was Cabelas in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. Huge parking lot that allows overnight parking. A huge store to visit and even a horse exercise area!

Could have brought a horse!
Lots of room. About 10 RVs stayed the night
Derick bought his first pair of Carhartts!

First Stop- RI

In the past , we started our travels with a visit to our son’s in Oneonta, NY. There was a nice park near him which now closes early for the winter. If only our son had a big driveway! Decided to start in RI so we could visit my mom(Deb is writing). She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in January and is in a health facility as she can no longer care for herself. She still knows who we are and we talk everyday. Can’t imagine what it will feel like when she doesn’t know me.

Nice visit and we added a new state to our travel map.

Leaving our digs in Vermont

Fifth Anniversary

Five years ago we sold our condo and bought a 40 foot motorcoach. The plan was to spend summers at our camp in Vermont then travel the warm parts of our country during the winter. We did this for 2 years and then the plan changed a bit. Covid kept us in Vermont for a winter, our sons didn’t want us traveling during the pandemic. It was a great winter and spending time with our granddaughter was a big bonus.

Winter 21/22 got us back on the road but some parental health issues made us focus our travels to Florida Not a bad way to spend the winter and it is a big state so we did exploring. The need to stay in Florida remains, so we bought a lot at Myakka River Motorcoach Resort in Port Charlotte. It is a beautiful resort and a great community of people. This will be our second year there.

We are embracing our new winter plans and are extending our travels down and back. We will restart our web posts focusing on travel, life in an RV and life in our 60’s Thanks for following along .

Florida is a Ridiculously Big State

We are New Englanders. You can probably hit all 6 states in 6 hours. Florida on the other hand is wide at the panhandle and long to the Keys. Deb’s dad wanted to join us on a little RV adventure. He lives in Port Charlotte an hour north of Fort Myers so we thought Key Largo would be a 4-5 hour trip so he can update really get a feel for it. Seemed like a good plan.

Fast forward to this summer and Red has a Marine Corp reunion in St Augustine right before our trip . Suddenly our 4 hour trip was 8 hours and traffic was nuts.

Despite the long day driving we enjoyed our few nights in Key Largo. Have a new appreciation for the size of Florida!

Enjoy some pics from Key Palms! Thanks for following!

Good Friends

We lived in Bennington, Vermont for about 18 months in the mid eighties. Deb worked at a bank and met Cathy Seaton there. We became friendly with Cathy and her husband, John. Every Friday we would go to their house for pizza and cards. We moved to Burlington in the fall of 1986 and have kept in touch via a few visits, Christmas cards and Facebook.

Fast forward to this week we’re we got to spend to evenings together again! Was less stressful than the 80’s with babies and toddlers but it was as close a connection as way back then! We can not see each other for over a decade but when we are together it is as if we were never apart. Hope you all have friends like that!

We were too busy talking to take pics but here are a few from the Flagler Beach area

Working on the Road

Since our trip to Virginia put us I 95, we decided it was a great chance to stop at Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort. This place is on our many online forums as a place you have to see. Like many of the Motorcoach Resorts, you can buy your lot and they will rent it out for you when you are not using it. Because the sites are owned, they can have nice upgrades like outdoor furniture or and outdoor kitchen. Ours came with a gas grill and gas fire pit, but you had to bring your own propane tank! No fire for us. Our Facebook page has photos from our time in Hilton Head.

Today we left for Beverly Beach Florida. The trip should take less than 4 hours but Derick works halftime on the road so today we had to be flexible. Our rig has a computer work station beside our dining table that Derick works from . Depending on meetings he can work for several hour shifts or all day. Today he was teaching a class online at noon. Since we were traveling today, he taught his class from a rest area in Georgia! All he needs is the internet as we have a generator. Just in case you think this life is always glamorous!

Next Stop ,Virginia

As we plan our trip south we choose places to spend 2 or 3 nights. Gives a nice visit with friends and relatives or just more time to get to know an area. Deb’s best friend , Vicki, lives outside Richmond so we spent 3 nights there to check out her new digs.

Derick had to work so Vicki’s son David took the ladies on a tour of Richmond. So much history and beauty. Thanks David, you were a great tour guide!

I 95 Here We Come!

Since we always start our travels in Oneonta, NY, we usually take a more western route south. But Deb’s BFF now lives in Virginia so east to I 95 we went!

We spent one night in the parking lot of Appalachian Brewing company as part of Harvest Host. Businesses across the country let you spend the night in their parking lots in exchange for your business. We have stayed at museums, farms and wineries. We were one of 5 RVs staying there and had a decent beer and nachos for dinner.

All trips start with Hannah

We have two beautiful granddaughters, Genevieve and Hannah. Genevieve lives in Vermont and we keep our rig in her yard when we are not traveling. We spend our last night in Vermont in the rig so we get to see her one more time before we travel!

Our first night on the road is in Oneonta, NY which puts us on our way to I81 south and let’s us see Hannah and her parents. We make it over a weekend so we can get some Hannah Nana Papa time! Now we can head to warmer climates with warm hearts!
